Katie Hargrave, Heath Schultz, Sarah Kanouse, and Nick Brown / Iowa Neo-Mountaineers
Of the fifty states, Iowa has the highest percentage of land in agricultural production. With 98% of its 36 million acres privately owned, Iowa, not surprisingly, ranks 48th in the nation in the percent of land in public ownership. Only Connecticut and Rhode Island have less, and Iowa is over ten times the size!
Eastern Iowa's low-relief topography makes even determining high points difficult. In many cases, private land owners may be unaware that the highest peak in the county is located on their land. Our unique climbing grade system refers not to the technical difficulty of the climb but rather to the logistical difficulty of determining the high points and negotiating access from private landowners. For example, the high point in Benton County is owned by a communications conglomerate is rated a 5, while the high point in Washington County, easily determined from topographic maps and owned by a friendly Iowa City resident, is rated a 1.
