Katie Hargrave / For and in consideration of the great love I bear: Does a tree have standing?
What is ownership? A popular Athens' tourist site, the Tree that Owns Itself calls into question human's relationship with nature. The Tree that Owns Itself was given sovereignty by its owner, William H. Jackson upon his death. In the pre-civil war South, the story of this tree asks: Can we control or really own any living thing? Viewers are invited to take a flag and an acorn from the tree, plant it, help it thrive, and give ownership of their little tree to itself.
